CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Gun violence is down in the City of Charlottesville compared to this time last year, according to Police Chief Michael Kochis.

He shared some statistics during Monday night's City Council meeting. Part I crimes, which are the most serious crimes such as robbery, aggravated assault and homicides, are down 5% compared to last year.

Between January and May of this year, there was one homicide, down from five last year.

Other violent crimes like shots fired calls and gun violence were also down, 28% and 50 percent, respectively.

He says Project Safe Neighborhoods and focused deployment of resources have aided in decreasing violent crime.

"I have not heard from any neighborhood who is disproportionately affected by violent crime, I've never heard they want less police. I've heard they want good policing, they want procedurally just policing. There's a difference," he said.
