AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A state prison in Augusta County has officially closed.

The Virginia Department of Corrections announced in December it would be closing the Augusta Correctional Center as well as three other facilities.

According to a release, the other facilities that have permanently closed are the Sussex II State Prison, the Haynesville Correction Unit #17 and the Stafford Community Corrections Alternative Program.

The decision to close these facilities was made “to enhance employee, inmate, and probationer safety, to address longstanding staffing challenges, and in consideration of significant ongoing maintenance costs.”

VADOC says that all employees who wanted to remain with the department have been able to do so.

Additionally, all impacted inmates and probationers have been relocated to other facilities based on their security level and classification.
