ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- People will be marking the Fourth of July holiday starting this weekend, and state and local officials are reminding residents that the best way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional display.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported eight deaths associated with the use of fireworks in 2023. One of those occurred in Virginia.

Another 9,700 injuries involved fireworks across the country.

“Misuse of fireworks can be deadly,” said Billy Hux, Virginia State Fire Marshal. “Opt for safety this holiday by enjoying fireworks at a professionally organized show.”

Additionally, the kinds of fireworks that are allowed vary from locality to locality. In Virginia, any firework that explodes, moves on the ground or in the air, or shoots a projectile is generally illegal.

Some localities prohibit the sale, possession or use of all fireworks, so residents are encouraged to check local ordinances.

There are some permissible fireworks in Virginia, and a list of those can be found here.

For those who are planning to use fireworks in areas where they are allowed, the Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue offers some safety tips:

  • Only use legal fireworks.
  • Always have adult supervision.
  • Never aim fireworks at another person or structure.
  • Have a water source handy.
  • Never attempt to re-light a firework.
  • Use only one firework at a time and keep your distance from others after you light it.

Officials are also encouraging residents to consider alternatives, such as party poppers, bubbles or glow sticks.

A major consideration this year is weather. The entire Commonwealth is experiencing abnormally dry conditions and is under either a drought watch or drought warning advisory from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

Anyone who is considering using fireworks is strongly encouraged to take steps to avoid igniting dry grass or foliage.
