ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- An area animal shelter is expanding a service that helps lower-income families keep their pets healthy.

The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA says it has received a $15,000 grant from Sentara Health.

According to a release, the money will help with work to expand CASPCA’s Compassionate Care Clinic this year.

Specifically, the money can be used to support the in-house and mobile low-cost veterinary clinic.

"We are incredibly grateful to Sentara Health for their generous support," said Jasmyn Davila, Clinic Operations Manager of CASPCA. "This grant will allow us to broaden the reach of our Compassionate Care Clinic, ensuring that more pets receive the medical attention they need. By expanding our capabilities, we can better serve our community and promote the health and well-being of animals and their owners."

CASPCA says Sentara is investing in the overall well-being of the community with this grant.

"When they come in lost it's so much easier to unite them with their families if they have a microchip. And obviously diseases can spread pretty easily, so making sure everyone is up to date on their vaccine helps our community pets and humans alike," said Sierra Stevens from CASPCA.

In particular, the mobile clinic will be able to get to more underserved areas to help those who may face barriers to getting their pets to the vet.

The next mobile clinic is on July 26 at Tonsler Park, and no appointment is needed.
