GREENE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- For years, the Greene Machine was a summer time staple for those in Greene County and after a decade away from the diamond, the team is making its return this summer.

"Just hearing the name come back is a spark for the county," Greene Machine head coach Jonathan Gentry said.

The original Greene Machine, a group of William Monroe boys that graduated over a decade ago, captivated the county, winning over 200 games and three state titles.

"It means a lot," former player Jacob Hirtz said. "Greene has been needing it's own farm system for lack of a better term. That's something that we had as members of this team."

And with the help of American Legion Post 128 and former Greene Machine players, the vision was finally able to come to reality.

"All the teams around us have been having Legion ball and I'm just glad that we can have it now because it's a cool experience," Greene Machine catcher/shortstop Gavin Battaile-Gilbert said. "And it's all our friends coming out and watching and playing for them. It's fun."

"We are fortunate to have the best cadre of coaches in American Legion that can be found," team administrator Ken Hess said. "We feel like we have some of the best coaches in the whole state."

But the goal isn't just to reignite the magic from the past, it's to prepare the future for what's ahead.

"Any extra at bats, any extra pitches that can be thrown, anything to work on your game further, that's what this is all about," Gentry said.

"Most of these kids here when they leave at the end of the high school season they play travel ball, Assistant Coach Gary Morris said. Sometimes they are playing in Georgia. They can be playing in God only knows where and just to have them here in the community and staying here and once we see a lot of kids want to stay here and not want to play on those travel teams, we can't wait to see all of that happen."
