CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A man from North Carolina has been sentenced to prison for a 2022 murder that occurred on the Downtown Mall.

Marcel Darell Washington of Charlotte, North Carolina, will spend 25 years in prison as part of a plea deal.

He faced up to 80 years in prison on second-degree murder and malicious wounding charges associated with an incident that occurred in October 2022 at Lucky Blue’s Bar.

Prosecutors said that Washington got into a fight with Davonn J. Wilson, who tried to run away and was shot by Washington.

Wilson suffered six gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital later.

Two bystanders who were walking past the bar at the time were also hurt. Both recovered from their injuries.

In February, the judge stated he needed more time to consider the plea deal before accepting it.

In court on Tuesday, the judge said he was hesitant to approve this deal, calling it “one of the worst cases he’s seen.”

The judge sentenced Washington to 10 years of probation and 40 years of good behavior upon his release. Due to Washington's age, he will likely be dead after the 40 years run out.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania and Police Chief Michael Kochis say that sends a message.

“If you commit violence, gun violence in this city, you will be held accountable and you're going to be incarcerated for a long period of time," said Kochis.

“This is not going to stop until the community gets involved and makes it stop. Put the guns down, stop shooting each other, stop terrorizing neighborhoods,” said Platania.
