CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- WellAWARE is a community health group that works to improve healthcare access for people living in Central Virginia neighborhoods with high rates of chronic diseases and significantly shorter life expectancies. On June 29, the group will co-host a free Healthy Streets, Healthy People community health event with Move2HealthEquity at Booker T. Washington Park.

The event will feature gardening information, music, raffle prizes, games for kids, CPR, and stop-the-bleed training, along with free Narcan, which reverses opioid overdoses.

Betsy Peyton, the director of WellAWARE, says that there will be 55 booths at the park, all following a specific twofold theme.

"We are looking at making all Charlottesville neighborhoods more livable," she said. "The other part of it is environmentally healthy streets. We just want people to enjoy the day and the community building aspect of it, but also to keep in mind, to know about these groups that are doing this work in our communities and for people to know about the resources."

Peyton also discussed WellAWARE's work to improve community health in Central Virginia, which over the last three years has included more than 2,500 therapeutic encounters, more than 1,000 home visits, over 1,000 provisions of free healthy food and 300 free rides to medical appointments.
