CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A former University of Virginia graduate student has waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Derek Rodriguez-Contreras is facing multiple sex-related charges in Charlottesville in connection with a May 2023 incident.

An alleged victim claims he raped her after she left his apartment on a night out.

Rodriguez-Contreras’ waiving the right to a preliminary hearing means he understands the Commonwealth has enough evidence against him to continue prosecuting the case.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Charlottesville Circuit Court in August.

He is also scheduled to stand trial in July on charges connected to an Albemarle County incident that occurred in September 2023.
