CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- With the warmer weather, more cyclists are out on the roads, maybe at their own risk.

In a recent social media post, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay revealed he had been in an accident while cycling, showing a livid bruise on his side.

That post has since sparked a conversation online regarding bicycles and safety.

Ramsay says he is lucky to be alive following the accident, and he urges his followers to wear a helmet while riding their bike.

Charlottesville has been trying to make cyclist safety a priority around the community, building lanes and other infrastructure to accommodate riders.

However, the University of Virginia Health System says it saw nearly 200 patients in the emergency room last year because of bike-related injuries.

Additionally, health officials report that more than 60 percent of cyclist fatalities from across the country involved riders who were not wearing helmets.

Kim Parker, at Blue Ridge Cyclery, suggests that bikers get helmets and some other accessories, such as rear lights and reflective socks.

“One of the simplest things we as cyclists can do it have things that more, that’re brightly visible,” she said. “So these are socks, they’re reflective. They’re neon. Your feet are moving when you’re pedaling. This is going to a visible thing to a motorist who is behind you, beside you or around you.”

Valerie Quick, the trauma program manager at UVA Health, says that bicyclist deaths peak during the summer months.
