LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A man who worked as a college adviser at Louisa County High School has been convicted on indecent liberties charges.

Louisa County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rusty McGuire announced on Monday that 24-year-old Samuel Mark Mackey was convicted on charges of taking indecent liberties with a minor while in a supervisory capacity.

According to a release, he worked for the Virginia College Advising Corps, a program of the University of Virginia that works to increase the number of low-income, first-generation and under-represented high school students who get into and complete college degrees.

In his capacity as a college adviser, Mackey met with high school students and helped them with financial aid applications, scholarships and college applications.

In October 2023, two juveniles came forward, saying they had received several inappropriate and vulgar messages of a sexual nature from Mackey.

The students had met with him during class at the high school, and he obtained their phone numbers. The students believed he wanted their numbers for the sole purpose of communicating about college.

The release says Mackey subsequently sought private meetings with the juveniles, and in one message, he even asked the student if she wanted to engage in sexual activity with him in his office.

When they received these inappropriate messages, the girls disclosed this behavior to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office’s School Resource Officer.

“It’s wrong to steal the innocence of a child, but it’s even worse when you are in a position of responsibility where the kids look up to you for guidance,” said McGuire about the convictions. “We’re glad Mackey was caught before this got any further.”

Mackey faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced in August.
