CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Meals on Wheels makes sure people who can’t get out easily can get food, and it helps their pets too.

The Charlottesville Meals on Wheels has teamed up with Sir Speedy of Central VA, a locally-owned promotional products business, for the Swag for Wags and Merch for Meows program.

Through the end of July, people who purchase logo swag or merchandise items from Sir Speedy will see 10 percent of their purchase donated to the Meals on Wheels Pet Program.

This program provides food for pets living in the homes of Meals on Wheels clients, relieving those residents of some of the financial stress that can be associated with pet care.

It is free to all clients, but it relies entirely on donations.

Across the country, Meals on Wheels reports that 29 percent of its clients have gone without necessities for themselves in order to provide for their pets.

Many Meals on Wheels clients are on fixed incomes, which forces them to make difficult choices sometimes.

The organization says donations to its pet program are more than just food because they help keep pets healthy so they can provide comfort and companionship to their people.
