INDIANAPOLIS, In (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Just hours after setting the world record in the 100 meter butterfly on the opening day of the 2024 U.S Olympic Swimming Trials, UVA rising senior Gretchen Walsh booked her place in Paris after she won the event with a time of 55.31.

Her time Sunday was the second fastest time ever in the event and .21 seconds faster than Torri Huske, who held the world record entering the trials.

Walsh was the women’s collegiate swimmer of the year after leading the Cavaliers to its fourth consecutive NCAA title this year and set American, US Open & NCAA records in the 50 free (20.37), 100 fly (47.42) and 100 free (44.83).

UVA teammate Claire Curzan was fourth in the race, finishing with a time of 57.47.

The U.S. Olympic Trials continue at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium thru June 23.
