RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A Nelson County site is now on the Virginia Landmarks Register.

The Warminster Rural Historic District covers more than 4,700 acres along about 3.8 miles of the James River.

Warminster was created in 1742 by Dr. William Cabell when he purchased bottomland along the river, which was then considered on the frontier of European settlement.

According to a release, Warminster represents a microcosm of the historical settlement and the agricultural, commercial and transportation trends in the Piedmont area from the mid-18th to 20th centuries.

The Commonwealth Board of Historic Resources approved adding 12 listings to the register at its meeting on June 20. Locations that are added can be places of historic, architectural, archaeological and cultural significance for Virginia.

Other locations added to the list are the Winslow Hospital in Danville, the Norwich Historic District in Roanoke, the Ida Mae Francis Tourist Home in Harrisonburg, the Greene Spring Mill in Frederick County, Bel Air in Front Royal, the Pleasant Ridge School Historic District and the Chesapeake Beach Historic District in Virginia Beach, the Hundley Hall and Hoskins Country Store in Essex County, Woodbourne in Westmoreland County, and the Hickory Hill County Training school in Richmond.

Documentation on all of these sites will be sent to the National Park Service so that they can be nominated for the National Register of Historic Places.
