CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- High temperatures and increasing humidity are expected this week, which means the area will likely see heat indices in the triple digits.

Due to these conditions, Charlottesville is opening several cooling centers for people who need to seek relief from the heat.

The Herman Key, Jr. Recreation Center on East Market Street will be open Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Central Branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on East Market Street will be open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Wednesday and Sunday.

“We have plenty of outlets here. We have chargers for phones with all the cords attached to them and we have a large meeting room on the third floor that used to be a courtroom, the Swanson case courtroom,” said Krista Farrell, the assistant library director at JMRL. “So that is a room that holds a hundred people.”

And the Tonsler Recreation Center on Cherry Avenue will be open Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.

There are several steps residents can take to minimize their risk of heat-related health risks, including staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities, and dressing appropriately.

Residents are encouraged to check on their vulnerable neighbors and friends, such as elderly relatives, children and people with chronic illnesses.

Additionally, pets and children should never be left inside a parked vehicle because the temperature inside one can rapidly hit dangerous levels even with the windows open a little bit.
