RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A local trail project is getting some funding as part of an effort to drive visitation to sites associated with the 250th commemoration of the American Revolution and Independence.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation announced on Friday that 25 programs across the Commonwealth are getting more than $200,000 in grant funding.

According to a release, the funding is coming through VTC’s VA250 Marketing Leverage Program, which is a reimbursable grant program leveraging existing marketing funds.

The program supports, promotes and markets programming, events, and interpretive signage related to quests for freedom, held against the backdrop of the revolution’s anniversary.

The release says these tourism marketing and sponsorship programs are designed to increase visitor spending by leveraging limited marketing dollars, to stimulate new tourism marketing through partnerships, and to extend the “Virginia is for Lovers” brand.

These specific grants are going to officially recognized VA250 Committees, historic sites and museums that must provide a targeted marketing plan, with programs supporting the mission of the VA250 Commission and driving visitation to destinations in the Commonwealth.

“Virginia’s story is crucial to the founding of our country,” said Rita McClenny, President and CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation. “With this funding, many localities will be able to share their own unique history, personal stories, and turning points amongst Virginia’s rich history and cultural traditions.”

Locally, Louisa County is getting $9,000 for the Jack Jouett Trail.

Jack Jouett is known colloquially as the “Paul Revere of the South” for his harrowing ride from Louisa County to Albemarle County in 1781, warning residents of the approach of British troops. He specifically rode to warn Thomas Jefferson and other members of state leadership so they could escape capture.

Programs receiving funding are in Yorktown, Culpeper County, Hampton, Staunton, Alexandria, Nottoway County, Clarke County, Hanover County, Salem, Portsmouth, Halifax County and others.

Another round of VA250 Marketing Leverage Program grants will open in August.
